"Plein Air" is a French phrase for being out in nature. Plein air painters take their artistic inspiration from outdoor landscapes, be it of people, places or objects. From the limited time of light outdoors and the shadow changes that result, the paintings tend to be created in one painting session, loose and simplified, and generally small in size.

Monet, the French Impressionist painter, was one of the pioneers of oudoor paintings. Monet's famous series of Haystack paintings are an inspiration example. This series depicts the same scene under many different lighting and weather conditions - a perfect example of plein air painting.

Typically plein air paintings are framed in gold or silver simply styled frames about 3" wide with little embellishments. The wide proportion of the frame compared to the smaller sized paintings relates well to the simple style of outdoor paintings.
